In May 2025, the Galway Bay Sailing Club played host to one of the most exciting events on the European sailing calendar—the 1720 European Regatta, also known as the 1720 European Championships. Running from May 9 to 11, this high-octane competition celebrated the sleek and spirited 1720 sportsboat class, a 26-foot keelboat designed by Tony Castro back in 1994 for the Royal Cork Yacht Club. Renowned for its fiercely competitive, one-design racing and vibrant social scene, the regatta drew top sailing talent from across Ireland, the UK, and beyond. Over three action-packed days, nine races tested the skill, stamina, and teamwork of each five-person crew, with every tack and gybe counting.
